4 steps for joining a trailblazing business

Want to join a trailblazing start-up? Here’s how!

To help career starters who are looking to join leading and trailblazing businesses, LinkedIn has shared advice on how young professionals can land a dream job with one of Ireland’s top start-ups.

LinkedIn has published its 2024 Top Startups list for Ireland, which recognises the top 10 most sought-after start-ups to work for in the country, is based on analysis of insights gleaned from LinkedIn’s 3m members in Ireland across four pillars: employee growth; job interest; engagement with the company and its employees; and the attraction of top talent.

Here are LinkedIn’s top tips:

  1. Explore what excites you

With so many possibilities and opportunities, it can be difficult to pinpoint what industry or sector you’d like to work in. Start by reflecting on what excites and energises you, taking inspiration from the hobbies, university projects, and passions you enjoy most. This will also help you figure out your strengths, for example, what are you naturally good at, or perhaps what are you wanting to learn more about?

Once you think about this, you can start looking at industries or roles that resonate with you, and that will allow you to continue growing your interests and strengths. Remember, it’s all a learning curve, so don’t be afraid to explore and experiment. You can also take advantage of LinkedIn’s 1 billion member strong community, to find inspiration from Gen-Z Top Voices who can help you make sense of the working world, and you can take inspiration from LinkedIn’s top Irish startups list.

  1. Begin building your LinkedIn profile

Start by building a professional LinkedIn profile that shows off your skills, experiences, and achievements. Use the “About” section to bring your profile to life, showing who you are and what your passions and motivations include. This section also gives you an opportunity to highlight your career goals, and how your strengths align. In the “Experience” section you can highlight the skills you got from captaining a team or volunteering work, or for example any leadership experience and time management.

  1. Supercharge your CV

Writing a CV can feel daunting, but you have a range of transferable skills from coursework, part-time jobs, or your gap year like resilience, problem solving, and teamwork. Identify these and highlight how you’ve used them. A good example would be to think back to a university research project and emphasise how this required analytical thinking, attention to detail, and handling data which are all highly valued soft skills in the workplace. LinkedIn Learning courses such as ‘What you need to know about crafting a stand out CV’ and ‘Rock your LinkedIn profile’ offer useful guidance on how to best position your skills and experiences.

  1. Lean into AI

AI skills are highly in-demand right now and could help give you a competitive edge when applying to entry level roles. According to Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Work Trend Index, the demand for AI skills is growing, and developing these skills now could really help set you apart.
