Logistics player ATC has embarked on an ambitious strategy to convert its fleet to electric vehicles.
ATC Computer Transport & Logistics shift to zero-emission vehicles was made possible with the support of Bank of Ireland which provided the Irish business with a crucial Financing Credit Facility.
The business has unveiled a landmark investment of €22.5m over five years to support its companywide ‘Driving Green Strategy’ including the ongoing transition of its HGV fleet from traditional combustion engines to battery-electric power
“This investment will fuel our growth across Europe, which in turn supports job creation and accelerates our shift to a sustainable economy”
This will see ATC convert its fleet across Ireland and Europe to cleaner, electric fuel.
The specialist transport and logistics business has set a target of achieving net zero status by 2030.
Headquartered in Dublin, ATC has a footprint across Ireland, Europe and New Zealand, with major offices in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and London. Employing over 250 people from over 31 nationalities, the business plans to increase headcount to 300 by 2026, and add two further international offices.
ATC also availed of the Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicle (ZEHDV) Purchase Grant Scheme, funded by the Department of Transport and administered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, to support the acquisition of battery-operated HVGs for the Irish-based fleet. The €500,000 grant is awarded to facilitate companies and enterprises who wish to purchase zero-emission HGVs.
The business was founded 45 years ago by Alan and Patricia Young and is now led by their son Keith Young.
ATC is an Irish family business with a global outlook
“Bank of Ireland provided us with crucial financing, enabling us to expand our zero-emission fleet across Ireland and, most importantly, Europe. This support was key to our growth and is driving our shift to zero-emission vehicles, which meet both our sustainability goals and client demands.”
Young explained that having greater flexibility meant ATC was able to expand its fleet not only in Ireland but also in Europe.
“The finance terms meant additional funds could be used not only to purchase trucks but also to fund broader company-wide green investments for the business. This included critical charging infrastructure, solar, and much more. All of this really moved the company close to our goal of net zero by 2030.
“This investment will fuel our growth across Europe, which in turn supports job creation and accelerates our shift to a sustainable economy,” Young continued.
“Flexible finance enables companies to expand their fleet and invest in vital green infrastructure like charging stations, which, if they don’t have them on site already, can be a big blocker for companies who want to change their fleets. This allows us to reduce emissions and brings Ireland closer to reaching its sustainability goals.”
The investment was welcomed by Derek Reilly, the host of Ireland’s leading Electric Vehicle YouTube channel and Partnerships Director of Nevo, which will be hosting its next Nevo EV Show in association with Bank of Ireland on 10 November.
“Seeing how Bank of Ireland are helping companies on their transition to a greener future is exactly why we are partnered with Bank of Ireland.
“It’s never easy taking a leap of faith like ATC Logistics are doing in Ireland and across their European fleets. Bank of Ireland are there to help its customers with a support network like Nevo to advise and assist with best practices from around Europe and even globally.
“What ATC Logistics have started is amazing and I applaud their initiative. They are future proofing the hardware they are selecting which is something Nevo recognises a big step in the right direction,” Reilly said.
Laura Gallagher, Head of Asset Finance Sales, at Bank of Ireland Corporate & Commercial Banking added: “Bank of Ireland are delighted to continue to support ATC Computer Transport & Logistics in providing appropriate financing in order to support their key strategic objectives. We look forward to deepening our relationship and wish them continued success in the future and on their journey to zero emission vehicles.”
