Rooftop solar installation will generate 1.3MW of electricity each year for logistics firm DPD.
DPD Ireland has completed the installation of a rooftop solar PV array at its central sortation hub in Athlone.
The parcel delivery company partnered with Waterford-based renewable energy solutions provider Enerpower to install the 512 leapton solar PV panels.
“We are making great strides towards a greener future as we press on with our commitment to decarbonise our network”
The solar panels will provide 11% of the hub’s electricity demands, and deliver an emissions reduction of 49,326kg of CO2 annually.
The CO2 savings are the equivalent savings of 18,000 litres of diesel or 231,000km driven by the average car.
Driving change
The 66,000 sq. ft. hub employs over 600 staff and processes over 100,000 parcels every night.
DPD Ireland CIO Colin Kennedy said the investment reinforce its commitment to becoming Ireland’s leading parcel company in sustainable delivery with the installation of solar panels.
“This rooftop solar array is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and our proactive approach towards reducing our carbon footprint.
“We are proud to partner with Enerpower, whose expertise and commitment to renewable energy have been instrumental in making this project a success.
“The solar initiative is just one of the many steps that DPD Ireland has taken towards a more sustainable future. We are making great strides towards a greener future as we press on with our commitment to decarbonise our network. By the end of this year, we will have deployed 200 electric vans to our depots, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability,” Kennedy said.
By year’s end, all of DPD Ireland’s linehaul routes will be fuelled by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), further aiding their journey towards a more environmentally friendly network.
