EpiSensor powers Taiwan’s energy future

Tech made by Limerick firm EpiSensor will help revolutionise Taiwan’s renewable energy capabilities.

More than 2,500 battery swapping stations across Taiwan are to be integrated using internet of things (IoT) technology developed by Limerick business EpiSensor.

EpiSensor’s technology is enabling the integration of Gogoro smart batteries and battery swapping GoStations into global energy giant Enel X’s virtual power plant, effectively enhancing Taiwan’s grid stability and sustainability.

“This world-first initiative not only enhances grid stability and efficiency but also creates new revenue streams and paves the way for a more sustainable energy future”

Through the roll-out, thousands of sensors on remote sites will monitor power consumption and react to frequency oscillations on the grid within seconds.

The sensors will send back accurate data for real-time analysis by Taiwan’s power transmission system.

Pioneering the future of energy

“We are thrilled to be a key technology partner in this pioneering project that is redefining the future of smart energy infrastructure,” said Brendan Carroll, CEO, EpiSensor.

“Our IoT solutions have supported the participation of Gogoro’s battery-swapping technology into Enel X’s Virtual Power Plant in Taiwan, proving the transformative potential of our technology. This world-first initiative not only enhances grid stability and efficiency but also creates new revenue streams and paves the way for a more sustainable energy future.”

Recently, EpiSensor won ‘Technology Innovation of the Year 2023’ at the Technology Ireland Industry Awards, in association with Ibec. This award was in recognition of the Demand Response Controller utilised in this programme and many other global demand flexibility projects.

“EpiSensor’s technology has been instrumental to the success of this project,” explained Enel X Taiwan’s head of Engineering Rosey Luo.

“In particular, the ability to push over-the-air firmware updates to remote sites reliably has enabled us to move quickly and adapt to changing requirements. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a sustainable energy future, enhancing grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy resources.”
