Can artificial intelligence developed in Ireland prove pivotal in the fight against the Covid-19/Coronavirus?
CeADAR, Ireland’s leading applied artificial intelligence (AI) centre, has offered the services of its expert scientists and researchers to help companies, government agencies, medical centres or charities in the fight against Covid-19.
CeADAR, which is Ireland’s National Centre for Applied Data Analytics and Machine Intelligence, has scientists and data analysts who are experts in using AI and machine learning to applied settings.

The centre’s director Edward McDonnell said he wanted to alert those working on solutions to stall the pandemic, that the centre’s scientists and researchers would be made available to them to lend their expertise.
Exploring every option

“We want to help make a contribution to improve people’s lives and help reduce the spread of the virus. We are already in talks with a number of companies in relation to some projects and want to let others know that we are here and willing to help in the fight,” McDonnell said.
Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland-funded CeADAR is a market-focused technology centre for innovation and applied research in AI, Machine Learning and Data Analytics. Its primary focus is on delivering industry prototypes, and technology demonstrators to business and industry in Ireland.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19/Coronavirus, the centre has already been exploring options to work with companies to develop AI tools to help detect the virus and track the compliance of the general public. These projects are still at the exploratory stage but the centre is now calling on other bodies to come to CeADAR if they need help.
“We will divert our researchers and scientists away from other projects in order to ensure that we all work towards a solution,” said McDonnell.
