“Despite the uncertainty in the economy, we can have optimism that Ireland’s open, fast-moving and collaborative economy will continue to grow businesses with an unrivalled track record of meeting the needs of global trade markets”

As storm clouds gather in the form of looming trade wars driven by the Trump regime, trade with the US is currently in strong shape with exports of goods to the US at €72.6bn in 2024, up €18.6bn (34%) on 2023.

Ireland is at the heart of global trade

Imports of goods from the US were €22.5bn, a decrease of 2% year-on-year.

Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products rose by €22.4bn (+29%) to €99.9bn in 2024 compared with 2023, while imports grew by €3.0bn (+24%) to €15.7bn.

“In 2024, Ireland’s exports of goods reached a record level of €224bn, an increase of €28bn compared with 2023,” explained Jane Burmanje, statistician in the International Trade in Goods Division of the CSO.

“Imports of goods in 2024 were €134bn, €6.7bn lower than the 2023 level, but €30bn higher than in 2021.”

The strong export performance bodes well for the Irish economy, said Janette Maxwell, tax partner at Grant Thornton.

“In 2024, Ireland’s exports of goods reached an impressive €224bn in 2024 – a record level for the year. This represented an increase of €28bn compared with the prior year, which points to Ireland’s key position within the global trade market.

“Despite the uncertainty in the economy, we can have optimism that Ireland’s open, fast-moving and collaborative economy will continue to grow businesses with an unrivalled track record of meeting the needs of global trade markets.”
