Food ordering platform Munchd is committed to empowering local takeaways and restaurants.
A recently launched app by food delivery platform Munchd aims to level the playing field for local food takeaways and restaurants.
Launched in February, Munch has developed a custom-built app alongside Dundalk marketing agency ZOMA that aims to take on established food delivery apps.
“Munchd has presented a 1% commission model, well below the industry average rates which can rise up to 30%”
Building on Munchd’s core mission of supporting local businesses, the app offers a seamless and convenient ordering experience for customers while maintaining its groundbreaking 1% commission model for restaurants.
Typically the larger competitors charge 10% to 30% commission. Munchd’s unique approach allows takeaways and restaurants maximise their profits, reinvest in their businesses, and offer more competitive prices to consumers.
Whet that appetite
David Kieran, managing director of ZOMA and Munchd
The Munchd app brings a wealth of features to users, including effortless browsing of a diverse selection of local restaurants and takeaways all in one convenient location. Users can enjoy streamlined ordering, placing orders quickly and easily with an intuitive and user-friendly interface. The app also provides access to exclusive deals, a loyalty program, and promotions available only through the app.
Since its launch in early 2024, Munchd’s prototype app has achieved an impressive turnover of nearly €2m, highlighting its rapid growth and strong market demand.
One of the demo takeaways on the Munchd platform managed to save over €100,000 on fees in 2024, which highlights the cost savings that takeaways and restaurants can achieve by switching to Munchd.
“The online food industry is dominated by large companies who charge commission and rates over and beyond average, which is having a huge effect on takeaways’ and restaurants’ profitability,” explained David Kieran, managing director of Munchd and ZOMA.
“Munchd has presented a 1% commission model, well below the industry average rates which can rise up to 30%.”
Something to munch over
Kieran said he saw a gap in the market in 2024 to develop a low cost online ordering system for takeaways and restaurants, and developed the app through his internal network with a relatively low cost to the development.
“We are offering an online ordering platform to takeaways and restaurants, along with their own independent website which helps with their search ranking. Anyone signed up to the platform then gets listed on the Munchd app which users can use by downloading from app stores.”
The business makes prolific use of AI. “We use AI daily to help with operations of the business, as well as developing key reports and KPIs to track the success of the business and the application performance. We have also embraced AI to assist with our marketing campaigns, which have produced excellent results to date.”
Kieran said that with tech and digital, there are always opportunities to develop a product or service with relatively low barriers to entry.
“Yes, competition can be high in sectors but once you identify USPs (unique selling points) and deliver a high quality service or product, you’re giving yourself the best opportunity to succeed.”
The development of the app was supported by ZOMA and the Local Enterprise Offices.
Kieran said that when it comes to app development, it is not simply a case of build it and they will come.
“In developing an app, there are so many pieces to the puzzle, so be sure to map out a clear roadmap to launch and testing. This is something we played catch-up with and cost us in time and financially, but a lesson learnt, and not one that was detrimental.”
His advice to fellow founders? “Spend time on developing your brand and identity and make it clear why people should use your business’ product or service. Remember, people buy from people so don’t hide behind your brand!”
