Nenagh sisters’ Nutshed experiences 230% growth

Evie and Eliza Ward’s peanut butter company spreads globally.

Nutshed has expanded its flavoured peanut butter range while reporting significant growth of 230% in the past four years.

The business is going from strength-to-strength and has launched its new Oat & Maple Crunch Peanut Butter to 600 shops from independent retailers to retail giants Dunnes Stores, Tesco and SuperValu.

“We chose to go outside the box, driving the business into new territories”

Nutshed is also growing globally and recently expanded into South Korea through the high-end Hyundai Department Stores and online retailer Market Kurly as peanut butters gain popularity in Asia.

Looking ahead, Nutshed plans to continue its expansion, with exports expected to account for 45% of their revenue within the next three years.

“We chose to go outside the box, driving the business into new territories,” said co-founder Evie Ward. “Conducting tasting events and cookery demos in South Korea throughout the year has been key in building a loyal customer base there.”

Based in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, and led by sisters Evie and Eliza Ward, Nutshed started out as a small market stall in 2014.

Since then, it has grown to become Ireland’s first producer of award-winning, single-origin peanut butters. Nutshed has developed a devoted following through its commitment to quality and pushing the boundaries with new flavours and innovative products.

The company now employs nine people and has sold over one million units of its flavoured peanut butters and plant-based treats. Despite this rapid growth, the business remains self-funded, with additional support from LEO Tipperary.

In recognition of their entrepreneurial success, this year, Nutshed was honoured with the National Enterprise Award for the South West region, becoming the first Tipperary winners of this prestigious accolade. Nutshed’s dedication to quality is underscored by their recent BRC accreditation, a global standard for food safety and manufacturing. Additionally, the company achieved Origin Green Certification, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices.
